This coming Friday (7 December) will be the last official Movie Night as offered by Curtis and Silmara.

They would like to thank everyone who came to the movies over the last five years, with a special thanks to those contributed to our fundraising campaign in 2015. Curtis and Silmara will be back for at least one special Movie Night event in 2019 (we hope to continue our annual collaboration with the Book Club), but otherwise they are hoping to find someone to pass the torch to so the movies stay on the screen and the popcorn still gets popped. Please speak to either of them if you’re interested, even if it’s for a one-off presentation.

In the meantime, we’re going to close out our year of documentaries with both a seasonal and a local touch: ‘Jingle Bell Rocks,’ from Vancouver filmmaker Mitchell Kezin!

With an eclectic cast of characters & songs, JINGLE BELL ROCKS! Is an exclusive backstage pass into the underground universe of original, alternative Christmas music. With titles like, Close Your Mouth (It’s Christmas), Santa Claus Was a Black Man or Merry Christmas Someone these funny, sad, satirical, and scathing songs explored the flip-side of the standard Yuletide themes: racial inequality, religious freedom, nuclear war, familial angst, or simply the yearning sadness of being alone at the happiest time of the year.

Obscure Yuletide LP collector Kezin uncovers the stories behind twelve of the most amazing Christmas songs you’ve likely never heard. Equal parts social history, pop culture pilgrimage and revealing character study, JINGLE BELL ROCKS! confronts the Christmas music mainstream, reinventing the seasonal soundtrack for the 21st century.

This is a Free event! (but donations to cover pizza and popcorn expenses are greatly appreciated)

Don’t miss it! Bring your friends!
